Divergence Without Wishful Thinking
A calm checklist for spotting RSI divergence that deserves attention versus divergence that is only decoration.
Divergence is seductive because it looks like foresight. Price makes a new extreme; RSI refuses to confirm. Traders often treat the mismatch as an imminent reversal rather than a question to investigate.
Useful divergence sits on a clear swing structure, appears on a timeframe that matches your holding period, and coincides with other evidence of fading force—volume tapering, failed breaks, or stalled follow-through.
Decorative divergence appears on every minor wiggle, conflicts with the higher-timeframe trend, or arrives after the market has already rotated. Marking every mismatch trains the eye to see prophecy everywhere.
In Momentum Interpretation Lab we practise labelling divergence as observation first. Trade plans come later, only when the rest of the chart agrees.
